Known universally as the Purple Tape — named for the purple cassette in which it originally shipped — Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… dropped in August 1995 and rewired what hip hop albums could be. Raekwon, with Ghostface Killah riding shotgun on nearly every track, built a fully immersive cinematic world out of Wu-Tang mythology, mafioso references, and RZA’s densest, most claustrophobic production to date. Every member of the Clan appears at some point, and a then-unknown Nas shows up on “Verbal Intercourse” in what became one of the most discussed guest verses of the decade. The original US pressing on Loud/RCA is a double LP with a purple-tinted inner sleeve and distinctive label design — this is the version collectors have been hunting for thirty years. There was no original vinyl pressing widely distributed at release; the record was primarily sold on cassette and CD, and the vinyl copies pressed in 1995 were limited and predominantly promo/retail stock.
