Expire – With Regret (2016 Bridge Nine Records LP, New & Sealed) — Milwaukee Hardcore Final Album Vinyl

· 2 min read ·

With Regret is Expire’s third and final full-length — the swan song of one of the most road-hardened hardcore bands of the 2010s. The Milwaukee quartet formed in 2009, relocated from Iowa, and spent seven years building a reputation on relentless touring before Bridge Nine came calling after their 2011 Sound & Fury appearance. They toured with Madball, Senses Fail, Stick to Your Guns, Stray from the Path, and Knocked Loose across the US, Europe, Japan, and Australia — and then on their own terms, announced the end. Their statement was direct: they’d rather stop when they wanted to than fade out. Spring 2017 was the finish line they set for themselves, and they kept to it.

The album was recorded at Chicago’s Bricktop Studios with Andy Nelson — the first time Expire had worked outside their home base of Howl Street Studios in Milwaukee. 13 tracks, nearly all under two minutes, dealing in damaged relationships and the kind of introspective bile that defined their catalog from day one. Slightly heavier than Pretty Low (2014), still unmistakably Expire. The release tour had them on the road with Knocked Loose before Knocked Loose were a household name — that’s the kind of label for the era this record comes from.
